When I first met the team who are creating Deepworld, a 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I advised them that the project would be bigger than they anticipated. They do have extensive experience in the development of software and servers, but running a game this big requires a significant investment. It looks like they now are in agreement. The game has spawned a Kickstarter project to try and raise funds early for servers and development.

The group is offering a variety of prizes to its supporters such as your own servers and worlds, as well as art books and other swag. Chilling and killing have the option of buying your own items, names, and even images for the game. The goal is to raise US$20,000 overall and as of this writing, the guys have collected around $4,000. They plan to make the project a full-time endeavor and this money will allow them to do this.

I certainly wish them the best. Deepworld looks great and I was with you when I first was introduced to it. I think that the Mac (and iOS) would greatly benefit from a game like that.
