Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, has banned NFT integrations Wednesday because it believes that NFTs have a speculative aspect and a high risk of exclusion, and scams are against the game's fundamentals.

The move was considered highly controversial within the NFT community, but it has been met with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic gamers.

The company of Sweeney's is responsible for Fortnite Battle Royale, a battle royale game that's hugely popular. It's also regarded as Metaverse's platform. While Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO has said Epic Games doesn't intend to force any opinions on the subject on its players:

Developers should be free to choose how they build their games, and you should be free to decide whether to play them. I don't believe that retailers or operating system developers should force their opinions on other people. We definitely won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgements, but NFTs do not currently fall under their remit.

"A store can decide to avoid making such judgments and host anything that is legal, or decide to define the accepted norms of the day like we do, or accept only games that conform to the personal beliefs of the owner," he said.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project called NFT Worlds with a major problem to solve, given that it was developed on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E), a community-driven platform for play-to-earn (P2E) is home to an entire crypto- and NFT ecosystem built around. The NFTs it uses generate 51,000 Ether (ETH) which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time of writing. Since the news broke however, the floor price of its NFTs has dropped from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH as of the time of writing, while its native token WRLD has plummeted by 55% within that timeframe.

The NFT Worlds team said that they are currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team has stated that they are in touch with Minecraft to find an answer. If not, a shift to an "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible possibilities.
