Amentha Rajagobal undergrad and Maya Sengupta–Murray discovered that alcohol has a significant impact upon the developing brain, particularly the hippocampus. This is the area responsible for spatial navigation.

Although alcohol has been known to have a negative effect on brain function in adults for some years, little is known about the effects on young brains.

To assess its impact, students asked undergraduate participants about their alcohol use. These questions included when they first drank, how often they drink, how much, and so forth.

They then asked the subjects to play a game in which they had to remember where objects were found in the world of Minecraft.

Researchers discovered that people who started drinking earlier in their lives had more difficulty remembering where objects were located than those who started later in their lives. Robinson Is Back

Rajagobal states that "the frontal lobes as well as the hippocampus are still developing into our twenties." "They keep changing and growing in ways the rest do not, so they are more susceptible to damage from drinking early on."

These effects could cause more harm than just a reduced ability to navigate a videogame or down the street.

Sengupta Murray says that the hippocampus is responsible for forming memories. "Suppose you have a dog. The hippocampus is responsible for connecting all of these sensations to form the memories of your dog.
