Mojang's breakout hit Minecraft came in second place on an official list by Google of the top YouTube search terms of 2014. It was ranked just behind "music" in terms of the frequency of searches.

According to Google, the word "Minecraft" was more frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than "movies." Gaming personality PewDiePie also ranked among the service's most popular searches in 2014, lagging queries for Disney's Frozen and for the artists Drake and Beyonce.

Google reports that users are more likely to search for gaming-related content and are engaging more frequently with them even though many of those surveyed don't identify as gamers. YouTube videos in the "Gaming" category hit the top of the Top 10 most popular list on 25 different days in October of 2014.

"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 among those who said they watch gaming videos on YouTube revealed that only a small portion of this group (37 percent) consider themselves gamers,'" the report states. "When asked why they watch gaming videos, people mentioned entertainment and fun as well as learning new strategies or tips.

The report continues: "We also wanted to discover the reasons why people watch videos by creators such as PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Quite a few fans answered"because they're hilarious! Some even have compared these videos to stand-up comedy. 6minecraftmods A new gaming creator summed the excitement with this analogy: "You don't have to play soccer to watch it on TV.'"
